Our latest career spotlight focuses on the city of Oxford, which is located in the north of our Thames Valley region.

Oxford is a city that combines history and modern culture, attracting tourism worldwide. It is well known as the home of the University of Oxford, one of the leading universities in the world. Oxford also has one of the strongest economies nationally. Its industries include motor manufacturing, education, publishing and a large number of IT and science-based businesses.

Oxford stats

Oxford has a population of 161,300 with 91,700 in employment and 3,100 unemployed. The average salary in Oxford is £29,398.

Current and future developments

Two key developments are changing Oxford. One is Barton Park, which is the largest residential development in the city for many years. This is an 885-home scheme including a new primary school, a food store, community hub and new sports facilities. The first phase has now been completed. The second development is Oxford North, which is a 1m square foot of commercial space and 500 homes.

The Westgate is a new major shopping centre in Oxford city centre that opened in October 2017 with over 100 shops, restaurants and a cinema.

Science Vale

Twenty minutes from Oxford is Science Vale, home to a large proportion of the South East's scientific, research and development and high tech businesses. The opportunities are endless here. By 2031, the region will have generated 20,000 new jobs within the fields of space technology, electronics and sensors, automotive engineering and life sciences.

Skills shortage occupations

In Oxford, there are particular skills shortages in construction, manufacturing, engineering and science. In addition to this, the care industry is an area with an expected huge increase in vacancies over the coming years – due both to an ageing population but also an ageing workforce in this sector.

Key economic sectors

  • Advanced engineering
  • Creative industries
  • Energy and environmental technologies
  • Information technology
  • Life sciences
  • Space related technologies
