The WOOP team has been busy delivering a variety of funded events for students in Berkshire schools and colleges (Y10 –Y13) to highlight the numerous career opportunities among the county’s 42,000 employers for people who have STEAM qualifications.

Many of you have already booked these events for your schools or colleges, which continue until the end of March 2019.  You will be pleased to know we still have a number of spaces available if you would like to take up the event offer, details of which are below:

WOOP STEAM Careers Day, Green Park, Reading

We have a few places left for this event for the afternoon session, which runs from 1.50pm – 3.05pm.  The session offers students  the opportunity to explore the variety of STEAM careers on offer in Berkshire by meeting and talking to local companies including Dell, Three, Thames Water, the Army, Pfizer (Pharmaceuticals), Oracle, Donald Reid (accountants), Helping Hands (Care), QA Training, SAE Institute (creative media university) and many more.

There are a number of workshops also on offer to students provided by Dell, Three, Thames Water, Education and Employers (information on Apprenticeships) and Helping Hands.  We are able to offer a contribution towards transport costs, please ask about this in your enquiry email.

Marvellous Medics STEAM Day – half a day

Students can discover Physiology, Lab Science, Medical Physics, Medical Engineering and Bioinformatics, there is something for everyone that likes science, engineering, maths, IT & computing.  As well as the usual doctors, nurses and paramedics, the focus will be on Healthcare Science careers that are responsible for 85% of all the diagnostic tests in the NHS.

Students also get the opportunity to use real medical kit to find out what goes on in a hospital including having the opportunity to use an ECG machine to record their heart and an ultrasound machine to see images of the inside of their body.

Coding, Gaming & Apps Day – half a day

Students have the opportunity to develop their very own video game using a tool called Construct. After a plenary session where students are shown the fundamental principles of building a level, each group will be tasked with developing further levels in their game.  Finally, feedback is provided and they will make a version of the game available to play online.

STEM now Challenge Event – whole day

This exciting event presents students with a challenge to build a brand new bridge to be constructed over the M4.  They will develop and utilize life skills such as project management, team working, communications and presentation skills in the design, construction and pitching of the build to a panel of experts.  Pupils must factor in parameters such as budget, environmental impact, accessibility and the needs of the local and national community.  The winning team will take their bridge design on to the regional final (date tbc).

If you are interested in finding out more about any of the above events please email by no later than 29th November
