    Skills We Need Now!

The Skills and Post 16 Education Act 2022 set out an ambitious employer-led approach aimed at making FE provision more responsive to local skills needs and to improve employer influence over the provision offered in their locality to fill their skills gaps. As part of this  new approach, this summer saw the publication of Local Skills Improvement Plans across 38 regions in the UK (LSIPs). These are collaborative initiatives aiming to shape and enhance local skills by connecting employers, education providers and stakeholders. Centred on addressing employer needs, LSIPs aim to develop a workforce with the necessary skills for priority sectors and were established under the guidance of designated Employer Representative Bodies (ERBs). All 38 LSIPs have been sanctioned by the Secretary of State for Education and will be updated and reviewed annually by the ERBs. As such , providers will now have the benefit of an evidence-based skills audit and credibly articulated priorities from local employers. To financially back these reforms, the Local Skills Improvement Fund (LSIF) was established, offering investments to enhance technical skills training in alignment with local employment needs. This fund, comprising £165 million spread over two fiscal years, is designed to rejuvenate facilities, foster curriculum development, and uphold excellence in education leadership. This will result in colleges and other training providers aligning courses accordingly.

For those of us engaged in careers guidance, it is therefore vital that we understand the skills shortages in the country as a whole, but more specifically within the areas that we deliver IAG. Guiding students to consider LMI trends as part of their career planning is a key skill which we aim to develop, and having a clear idea of where they are likely to find sustained employment opportunities in their local and neighbouring areas can only assist in this.

For this reason, we are launching the ‘Skills We Need Now’ series on the NEWS area of our portal. This will consist of a series of weekly articles focusing on each of the sectors identified in the Bucks, Oxon, Berks and Wilts LSIPs, relevant careers and courses currently available as pathways in. These will be supported by webinars and podcasts as appropriate. We will also keep a close eye on the LSIPs plans and report new initiatives as they are launched.

Updated statutory guidance for careers July 21

This is statutory guidance from the Department for Education issued under Section 45A of the Education Act 1997. Maintained schools and academies in England must have regard to it when carrying out their duty to ensure that there is an opportunity for a range of providers to access pupils to inform them about technical education and apprenticeships. Maintained schools, academies, further education colleges and sixth form colleges must also have regard to it when carrying out their duty or funding requirement to provide pupils with independent careers guidance.
