A great opportunity for a young person: seeking a young volunteer Trustee to help us transform lives

Adviza is a charity that helps young people and adults to improve their prospects and make better, more informed decisions about their careers and education. We deliver one-to-one support from Careers Advisers, and community programmes and projects where we help groups of young people gain valuable work experience and life skills while developing their confidence. We love helping people to expand their horizons and discover a new sense of ambition and excitement about their career and education.

Our support is for anyone, including young people who are not in education, employment or training, or people with special educational needs or disabilities.

We are now seeking a volunteer Trustee between 16 and 24 years of age, whose energy, ideas, personal experience and insight will help to keep us on the ball and make sure our services for young people are accurate and “fit for purpose”.

You will join our Trustee Board where your contribution will help us to better understand and reach the young people we need to support.

About you

We would love to hear from any young person (16 – 24) who has the passion and desire to help us transform lives. It will be particularly useful if you have received careers or community support services including, but not restricted to:

  • The Prince’s Trust Team programme
  • Any support services for young people not in education, employment or training
  • Careers Advice in a school, college or University
  • Careers support for young people with special educational needs or disabilities
  • Careers support services aimed at specific communities or religious groups
  • Local careers development programmes delivered by youth clubs, charities, foundations, sports clubs or community centres, or similar.

We particularly encourage applications from young people who have a BAME background, and who have direct experience of using Adviza’s services, but this is not essential.

We expect this will feel like a big (and hopefully exciting) challenge, but don’t worry, we offer lots of training and support and have a number of fellow Trustees who will mentor you to help you.

What you will do: the role of our Trustees

Like many charities, our leadership team is advised by a team of Trustees. These are volunteers with relevant experience or knowledge who help to guide us in a number of areas, such as making sure we provide the right services for the individuals and communities we support.

Our Trustees share their ideas, bring different points of view to the table and challenge us to continually improve. As a lot of our services are aimed at young people and school and college students, we really need to listen to young people to learn more about how we can help them. And that’s where you come in.

You will help us to make strategic decisions, working closely with the most senior people in our organisation, and you will be supported by your fellow trustees so you fully understand what we do and how to contribute.

Although this is voluntary position, your travel costs and related expenses will be covered, and this is an opportunity to gain rich experience that will help with your career – lots of our previous young trustees have gone on to all sorts of exciting roles.

Key responsibilities

As a Trustee, your responsibilities will include:

  • Helping us to understand the challenges young people and/or specific communities face in making career decisions, and the support they need
  • Helping us to maintain and refresh the mission, vision and values of the charity
  • Making sure the voice of the people who use our services are heard and acted on at all levels of the organisation
  • Participating in three Board and three committee meetings per year, as well as occasional events such as strategy away days. We have four committees: Finance, Business Development, Personnel and Performance & Quality. Most meetings will be via Zoom but a minority will be in person, probably at our Bracknell offices in Berkshire
  • Providing fresh ideas that help us to adapt and stay relevant.

How to apply

To express your interest please send an email explaining why you are interested in becoming a Youth Trustee, to: [email protected].

If you have a CV, please attach this, or you could produce a summary of your academic/professional/life experience so far on no more than two sides of A4.

The deadline for applications is midnight on Thursday 30th September.
