Research consistently shows that parental influence overrides the influence of teachers, careers advisers and even people working in the occupation, but parents/carers often state that they do not always feel that they have the correct information or access to career related resources to be a positive influence.

Supporting your child during key transition points

    Here are some useful tips:

    • Be involved, but not in control
    • Advise, but do not decide
    • Support but do not dominate
    • Gain a shared understanding of your son/daughter’s likes and dislikes
    • What are their strengths and weaknesses
    • Put them in contact with any work colleagues, friends and neighbours who do jobs that they are interested in
    • When old enough help them to find work experience/work shadowing to support future applications and CVs.

The Careers Guidance For You portal has all the information you need to be that positive influence!
