Did you know that there are many opportunities to participate in work experience online? Developed throughout Covid, there are now a plethora of virtual work experience programmes in the UK offering students the opportunity to gain practical skills, industry knowledge, and experience remotely. They’re especially beneficial if you are unable to participate in traditional, in-person work experiences due to various constraints such as geographical location, time limitations, or health concerns.

From a financial perspective, virtual work experience tends to be more cost-effective than traditional in-person internships or placements. With no expenses related to commuting, accommodation, or other logistical factors, participants can focus solely on the learning experience without financial burden.

They’re well structured too, offering defined learning objectives, tasks, and projects designed to simulate real-world work scenarios. Whether working individually or collaboratively in virtual teams, you can receive hands-on experience that mirrors professional environments. What’s more, the programmes often provide flexible schedules, enabling you to balance your studies, work, or other commitments.

Despite the remote nature of these programmes, networking is a great side benefit. Participants often have opportunities to connect with industry professionals, mentors, and fellow participants, fostering valuable connections for future career development and industry insight.

Furthermore, some virtual work experience programs offer certificates of completion or recognition, enhancing your CVs and showcasing your dedication to professional development.

When considering virtual work experience opportunities, thorough research is crucial. It's essential to choose reputable programmes offered by established organisations, educational institutions, or companies. Some programmes will be more suitable for you while you're still at school, but you can also plan longer programmes that you can apply for during university holidays or after graduation.

    WHERE TO FIND THEM

Specialised Platforms: There are platforms specifically designed to connect students and professionals with remote work experience opportunities. Examples include:

    Springpod

Springpod is an online platform that connects students with various opportunities such as work experience, internships, and career-related events. It serves as a bridge between students and employers, allowing students to explore different career paths, gain insights into industries, and connect with potential employers. Springpod often collaborates with educational institutions and businesses to provide students with valuable resources and experiences to enhance their employability skills.

    Virtual Internships:

Virtual Internships offer remote internship opportunities for students and recent graduates to gain practical work experience in various fields. Participants typically work on real projects, collaborate with teams remotely, and receive guidance and mentorship from professionals in their chosen field.

    Forage

Forage offers virtual work experience programmes created by leading companies worldwide. They are typically free and open to students from various academic backgrounds. Students gain practical skills and experience by completing virtual projects and tasks developed in collaboration with partner companies.

University Career Services: Many universities have dedicated career services departments that offer resources and information about online work experience opportunities. They may also have partnerships with companies or organisations offering virtual placements.

Online Job Boards: Websites like Indeed, and  Reed often feature listings for virtual internships or work experience programmes. You can use filters to narrow down your search based on your interests and location.

Company Websites: Some companies directly advertise virtual work experience opportunities on their websites. It's a good idea to check the career or opportunities section of companies you're interested in to see if they offer any remote placements.

Professional Networking Platforms: Platforms like LinkedIn can be valuable for finding virtual work experience opportunities. Follow companies you're interested in, join relevant groups, and network with professionals in your field to stay informed about potential opportunities.

Social Media: Keep an eye on social media platforms like Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram, as companies and organisations sometimes announce virtual work experience opportunities through their social media channels.

Professional Associations and Societies: Industry-specific professional associations and societies may offer virtual work experience programmes or provide information about opportunities within their respective fields.

Educational Institutions: Apart from universities, other educational institutions such as colleges and training providers may also offer online work experience programmes or have partnerships with companies to facilitate such opportunities. Keep a look out when doing your research!
