In today's digital age, the term "influencer" has become a buzzword among young people. From fashionistas to gamers, influencers hold significant sway over their followers, often showcasing a seemingly glamorous lifestyle filled with freebies, fame, and fortune. On our eCLIPS site, you will find a very comprehensive summary of the life as an influencer, and the opportunities and skills you need, but behind the perfectly curated Instagram feeds and sponsored content lies a world with its own set of challenges and pitfalls. So, before diving headfirst into the world of influencing, we thought it would be useful to explore the pros and cons.

    PROS:

Creativity and Expression: Being an influencer provides a platform to express your creativity and individuality. Whether you're passionate about fashion, fitness, or food, you have the freedom to share your unique perspective with the world!

Opportunities for Collaboration: Influencers often collaborate with brands, which can lead to exciting opportunities such as sponsored trips, product endorsements, and exclusive events. These partnerships not only provide financial benefits but also allow you to expand your network and gain valuable experience.

Flexibility and Autonomy: Unlike traditional 9-to-5 jobs, being an influencer offers flexibility in terms of schedule and location. You have the freedom to work from anywhere in the world and create content on your own terms, allowing for a better work-life balance.

Impact and Influence: As an influencer, you have the power to inspire and influence others positively. Whether it's promoting body positivity, environmental awareness, or social justice issues, you can use your platform to effect meaningful change and connect with like-minded individuals.

    CONS:

Pressure to Perform: With millions of influencers vying for attention on social media, the competition can be fierce. There's a constant pressure to produce engaging content, gain followers, and stay relevant, which can lead to stress, burnout, and even feelings of inadequacy.

Loss of Privacy: Being in the public eye means sacrificing a certain degree of privacy. Your personal life may become fodder for public consumption, and dealing with negative comments, trolls, and invasive questions comes with the territory.

Isolation: Being an influencer often means creating content alone, which can be tricky, as social contact with others is the necessary spark for ideas and opinions. As a young person, it’s also vital for your wellbeing and growth to mix with people of different ages and backgrounds which you may have less chance to do.

Little downtime: Your success may be pinned on how quickly you respond to what is happening in your chosen field, or you may feel that you have to post very regularly to maintain views etc. Fitting in holidays could be very tricky!

Uncertain Income: While successful influencers can earn substantial income through brand partnerships and sponsorships, the income stream can be unpredictable and inconsistent. Relying solely on influencer earnings without a stable source of income can be risky, especially considering the ever-changing landscape of social media algorithms and trends. According to a recent survey,  influencers with follower counts ranging from 1,000 to 100,000 typically earn around £1,021 per month, while those with over one million followers can average £11,050 monthly. However, a mere 4% of the 2,000 respondents reported being able to sustain themselves solely through influencer income. Considering that the average monthly salary in the UK amounts to £2,900, it's prudent for influencers to diversify their income streams.

Authenticity and Identity: Maintaining authenticity in a space inundated with sponsored content and curated lifestyles can be challenging. There's often a fine line between genuine self-expression and responding to brands' or followers' expectations, leading to a sense of disillusionment and loss of identity. Some influencers have recently left their roles as influencers to go into more personally fulfilling careers.

Influencers embody the spirit of entrepreneurship, constantly innovating to monetise their platforms and expand their audience reach. Success in this field hinges on a blend of talent, strategic thinking, and fortuitous timing. However, opportunities also abound within the broader influencer field, encompassing roles such as management, editing, and tech development. With the influencer landscape showing no signs of slowing down, content creators possess valuable insights applicable beyond social media, extending into realms like PR and marketing post-influencer career.

In conclusion, while being an influencer offers many exciting opportunities for creativity, collaboration, and impact, it also comes with its fair share of challenges. It's essential to approach influencer culture with a critical eye, prioritise authenticity and well-being, and remember that behind the filters and hashtags, influencers are real people with both strengths and vulnerabilities. So, if you're considering embarking on the influencer journey, tread carefully, stay true to yourself, and always strive to make a positive difference in the lives of others!
