National Careers Service logoIn the journey of career exploration and development, the National Careers Service has proven to be a hub guidance and offers support for individuals navigating the complexities of finding the right job. Here a customer shares her experience with the National Careers Service, shedding light on the exceptional care and service which is provided by this valuable resource.

At 58 years old, Julie* found herself at a crossroads, faced with the challenges of making job applications and attending interviews after a period of unemployment. Faced with the daunting task of reinventing her career path, she turned to the National Careers Service for assistance, driven by a desire for change and a new venture.

As a 58 year old it is a scary place to be when you find yourself out of a job after being employed and then going through applications and interviews which come to nothing. It is exhausting and demoralising especially as you so want to get back to work and make a difference with all these skills and experience built over years - you find yourself losing confidence.

When asked about her initial contact with the National Careers Service, Julie revealed:

Having completed skills assessments on the online careers service portal, I decided to seek guidance to help me find a job that truly fitted me and my aspirations, rather than simply continuing along the same path.

Julie’s National Careers Service Adviser Karen, offered personalised guidance and support to help with professional development. Karen's insights and recommendations proved invaluable as Julie navigated the intricacies of CV refinement and job search strategies. Julie shared:

It was enlightening to talk to Karen about my CV. Having someone else’s opinion and careful critique really helped me see where I could improve on my CV. Also giving me great advice and websites to help myself. I didn’t realise how much useful information was on the website and that I could receive CV advice etc. Karen gave me all the useful links for free courses, plus gave me an action plan for my CV writing going forward. I’m very grateful for that, thank you.

Reflecting on the impact of her interactions with the National Careers Service, Julie remarked:

The National Careers Service was instrumental in giving me confidence. By being able to complete various skills and experience assessments, it helped me acknowledge I do have skills, experience and I would be a great asset to any company.

Embracing the guidance offered by the National Careers Service, Julie diligently tailored her CV, engaged in free courses, and participated in personal development initiatives. Despite encountering setbacks along the way, including unsuccessful interviews, she remained resilient, drawing strength from her newfound sense of purpose and determination. Julie said:

Having the free courses and personal development courses has kept my mind active and busy, as well as given me the opportunity to explore other areas of work.
